SWB-A has gone global. We have teamed up with TakingITGlobal - an online community of 20,000 students and almost 4,000 teachers from 104 countries. TakingITGlobal connects youth to find inspiration, access information, get involved, and take action in their local and global communities. Through TakingITGlobal, SWB-A students will also take the Sprout e-course.
Sprout is an e-course for young people who want to grow their social or environmental project idea and learn to create lasting change that takes root in their communities. Sprout provides young leaders who have a well thought-out, community-focused idea with an opportunity to grow, learn and connect with like-minded leaders in a supportive environment that encourages their hard work to create a better world.
"These young people are not only the leaders of tomorrow; they can play a leading role in the development of their communities today. Let us hope that their good works today blossom into lifelong commitments that will benefit all the world's people."
— Kofi Annan, Former Secretary General of the United Nations.
So... what is a global citizen?
We see a Global Citizen as someone who:
· is aware of the wider world and has a sense of their own role as a world citizen.
· respects and values diversity.
· has an understanding of how the world works economically, politically, socially, culturally, technologically, spiritually and environmentally.
· is troubled by social injustice, participates in and contributes to the community at a range of levels from local to global.
· is willing to act to make the world a more sustainable place and takes responsibility for their actions.
Education for Global Citizenship is …· asking questions and developing critical thinking skills
· equipping young people with knowledge, skills and values to
participate as active citizens
· acknowledging the complexity of global issues
· revealing global issues and connections as part of everyday
life, whether in a small village or a large city
· understanding how we relate to the environment and to
each other as human beings
· relevant to all areas of the curriculum and life.
Education for Global Citizenship is not …
· too difficult for students to understand
· mostly or all about other places and peoples
· about telling people what to think and do
· providing simple solutions to complex issues
· an extra subject to cram into a crowded curriculum
· about raising money for charity
· an excuse to go on a charity holiday to exotic locations
